Mutual Fund Redemption Time: What to Do When Money Is Not Received

By Mahesh Jainโ€ข11 min readโ€ขUpdated 29 September 2026

You redeemed a mutual fund to pay a bill. The app now says processed, the units have reduced, but your bank balance has not increased. The next useful step is to identify whether the instruction, the redemption or the bank payment is still incomplete. Repeatedly checking the portfolio value will not identify which stage needs attention.

๐Ÿ’กHow long does mutual fund redemption take?

SEBI's March 2026 Master Circular specifies transfer within three working days for ordinary redemptions, and five working days for schemes investing at least 80% of total assets in permitted overseas investments. Exceptional circumstances can change the applicable timeline. Confirm your valid request's effective date and the scheme's payout schedule.

These provisions are in paragraphs 15.3.1 to 15.3.3 of the SEBI Master Circular, pages 237โ€“238. This guide concerns redemption of Indian mutual fund units through the applicable fund servicing route. Selling an ETF on an exchange, withdrawing from a broker balance, and requesting an NFO refund are different transactions.

Separate the four stages of a redemption

StageEvidence to look forWhat it does not establish
Instruction submittedOrder acknowledgement and timestampThat the request was valid and accepted for that day's processing
Redemption accepted and pricedAMC/RTA transaction record, units and applicable NAV dateThat the bank has received money
Payout initiatedAmount, payment date and UTR or other traceable referenceThat the receiving account accepted the credit
Bank credit completedCredit entry in the correct bank accountThat any separate delay-interest issue has been resolved

Different platforms use words such as successful, completed and settled for different stages. Ask what the status means in that system. An order can be completed at the platform while a payment is still being reconciled elsewhere. Conversely, money may already have arrived with a bank narration you did not recognise.

Save the acknowledgement before opening a query. Record the fund, plan, option, folio or demat reference, units or amount requested, and the date and time. These details let support trace a specific transaction rather than respond with a generic timeline.

How working days change the expected payment date

A working-day timeline is not a 72-hour promise. Weekends, scheme-specific holidays and the effective processing date matter. The following calendar is hypothetical: assume the provider confirms Friday as T, the effective redemption day; Saturday and Sunday are non-working days; and Monday through Wednesday are working days for this transaction.

DayIllustrative countWhat to check
FridayTValid request accepted for Friday processing
Saturday and SundayNot countedWeekend excluded under the example assumptions
MondayT+1First subsequent working day
TuesdayT+2Second subsequent working day
WednesdayT+3Third subsequent working day

If Monday is also a relevant holiday, that illustrative T+3 date moves to Thursday. If Friday's submission only becomes effective on Monday, the count changes for a different reason. Ask for the effective date explicitly, especially when you submitted after a channel's operational deadline or on a non-business day.

An applicable NAV date and a payout date are separate facts. Your proceeds can be priced using one day's NAV and reach the bank later. Once the redemption is completed, a later movement in the fund's NAV does not ordinarily reprice those already redeemed units. The confirmation should tell you which NAV and unit quantity produced the proceeds.

Liquid and overnight funds, overseas schemes and other specialised arrangements can have different operating schedules. Do not copy the clock from a purchase article into a redemption calculation. A platform may also process requests through a particular exchange or clearing route. Its service page is useful for that route, but is not a universal statement of every AMC's process.

Money not received: follow this troubleshooting sequence

1. Establish whether the redemption actually happened

Look for the redemption entry in the AMC/RTA statement or relevant demat records. If the order is rejected or there is no corresponding transaction, ask for the specific reason and correction needed. Units subject to a lock-in, lien or other restriction may not be freely available for a requested redemption.

Do not submit a duplicate sale while the first instruction's status is unclear. A second accepted instruction could redeem more units than you intended. If you only meant to stop future SIP contributions, that is a separate instruction from selling the existing units.

2. Verify the destination bank account

Check the bank account attached to this transaction, rather than assuming it is the account currently displayed in your preferred app. An old folio, demat account or platform route can point to a different registered account. Compare only enough digits to identify the account securely, and check whether it is active and able to receive funds.

If you recently requested a bank change, ask whether it was accepted before the redemption and which account was selected for payment. Ask for the specific rule and dates if a verification or cooling period is cited. A vague reference to bank processing is not a complete explanation of the payment trail.

3. Obtain a traceable payout reference

If support says payment has been sent, request the payout amount, initiation date, beneficiary account identifier and UTR or equivalent reference. Then give the reference to the receiving bank through its official support channel. This lets the bank look for a particular payment rather than search by an approximate amount.

Where the bank rejected the credit, ask for the rejection reason, the date the funds returned and who will reinitiate payment. For example, Zerodha's payout-rejection guidance describes its own BSE clearing route and subsequent handling. Use your provider's actual route and instructions; those platform-specific steps should not be assumed to apply everywhere.

4. Compare the bank credit with the redemption advice

Search the bank statement across the expected date range, including unfamiliar payer narrations. An exit load or other applicable deduction can make the credit smaller than the headline redemption value. Request the gross amount, each deduction and the final payable amount so that the numbers reconcile.

A lower payment and a missing payment are different problems. For the first, use the exit-load calculation guide. For the second, pursue the payment reference and failed-credit trail. Keep tax reporting separate from both, because the amount credited is not itself the taxable gain.

Common statuses and the best question to ask

What you seePossible issue to investigateUseful question
Pending validationThe request has not yet become a valid processed redemptionWhat is missing, and when will the effective date be confirmed?
RejectedA transaction requirement was not metWhat is the exact rejection reason, and are the units still held?
Units reduced; no bank creditPayout is pending, untraced or rejectedWhat are the payable amount, payout date and payment reference?
Paid; bank finds nothingWrong account, failed credit or incomplete referenceWhich beneficiary account received the payment attempt?
Bank details changed recentlyVerification or destination-account issueWhich mandate is effective, and what documented timeline applies?
Less money than expectedNAV, unit quantity or deductions differ from expectationPlease provide a gross-to-net calculation

These are diagnostic possibilities, not a finding that the AMC or bank has made an error. A useful answer should connect the status to documentary evidence and a next action. Keep one timeline of events so that each support team sees the same facts.

Does a delayed redemption qualify for interest?

Paragraph 15.4 of the March 2026 SEBI circular provides for 15% annual interest for delay covered by the provision, borne by the AMC, with investors informed of the rate and amount. Eligibility and the delay period require the applicable deadline and transaction facts; a missing app update alone does not establish a claim.

Ask the AMC to address delay interest expressly if you believe its deadline was exceeded. Include the accepted request date, the deadline you calculated, actual payment date if known, and its explanation for any exception. You do not need to invent a legal conclusion to ask for a written assessment.

๐Ÿ”ขIllustrative interest arithmetic

If โ‚น1,00,000 were eligible for interest for four days at 15% a year, a simple calculation using 365 days would be โ‚น1,00,000 ร— 0.15 ร— 4 รท 365 = โ‚น164.38. This demonstrates annual-rate arithmetic only. The four eligible days are assumed; the example does not establish compensation due in any real case.

A 15% annual rate does not mean 15% of the redemption amount is payable after a short delay. The claim also needs to distinguish an AMC transfer delay from a receiving-bank issue and any documented exceptional circumstance. Ask for the basis of acceptance or rejection, then retain the response with the payment record.

A support message you can adapt

Use the official AMC, RTA, platform or DP channel appropriate to the holding. The following is an original template; replace the placeholders with your own details and attach only the relevant records through a secure channel.

Subject: Redemption processed but bank credit not received. I submitted a redemption for [scheme, plan and option] under [folio or account reference] on [date and time], transaction reference [reference]. The current status is [status], and the confirmed effective redemption date is [date, if supplied]. Please confirm the gross proceeds, deductions, net payable amount, destination bank account identifier, payout date and UTR or equivalent reference. If the credit failed, please provide the rejection reason, return status and reprocessing date. If the applicable deadline has been exceeded, please assess delay interest and explain the calculation or the reason it does not apply. My previous support reference is [ticket].

Attach the acknowledgement, relevant redemption statement entry and a bank statement covering the expected credit period. Avoid sending an entire financial history when a narrower document will answer the question. Record promised follow-up dates and continue on the same ticket where possible.

When to escalate an unresolved payment complaint

First raise the matter with the concerned entity and keep its response or evidence that you approached it. If the grievance remains unresolved, SEBI SCORES provides a complaint-handling route for eligible securities-market matters. Describe the transaction, the missing outcome and the remedy requested, rather than submitting only a screenshot of a balance.

The SCORES FAQs specify 21 calendar days for the entity's action-taken report after receipt on SCORES and a 15-calendar-day window to seek review of an unsatisfactory response. Follow the live portal's notices. These complaint-process periods are not an extension of the original redemption deadline or a guarantee of bank credit on a particular day.

SCORES facilitates grievance redressal; it does not replace every dispute-resolution or legal remedy. If your case is outside its scope or involves contested facts needing adjudication, use the route identified by the platform or obtain appropriate professional help. Keep the complaint focused on the evidence you can document.

Plan withdrawals before a hard payment deadline

For a school fee, property payment or insurance renewal, work backward from the date the money must be spendable in your bank. Allow for the scheme's processing schedule, holidays and time to correct an account problem. A planned withdrawal should have a buffer; it should not depend on the fastest possible processing outcome.

  • Verify the receiving bank details well before a large planned redemption.
  • Check available units, lock-ins, exit loads and the amount needed after relevant deductions.
  • Confirm the transaction route and current service timeline with the provider.
  • Retain the confirmation and verify actual bank credit before treating the payment as complete.
  • Keep immediate emergency cash accessible separately from assets that require redemption processing.

Our emergency-fund guide covers that last point, while the SWP guide explains recurring withdrawals. If you need help reading the transaction records, contact Mahesh Jain MFD. The AMC, RTA, clearing route or bank remains responsible for tracing and resolving the payment at its stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days does mutual fund redemption take?

The March 2026 SEBI circular sets three working days for ordinary redemptions and five for schemes investing at least 80% of assets in permitted overseas investments, subject to exceptional circumstances. Confirm the valid request's effective date and applicable schedule with your provider.

Do weekends count in a redemption timeline?

Do not count calendar days as working days. Check the business-day definition and relevant holiday calendar for the scheme and transaction. A request submitted on a weekend may become effective only on a later business day.

Why are my units reduced before money reaches my bank?

The redemption and the bank payout are separate stages. Obtain the priced redemption confirmation, net payable amount, payout date and payment reference, then trace the credit to the correct account.

Should I redeem again if the first payment has not arrived?

First establish the status of the original request. Another accepted instruction can sell additional units and does not resolve a missing payout from the first redemption.

Is compensation automatic whenever a redemption seems late?

No conclusion can be drawn from a dashboard alone. The applicable deadline, accepted request, payment trail and any documented exception must be checked. Ask the AMC to assess delay interest and provide its reasoning in writing.

Does redeeming all units automatically cancel my SIP?

Do not assume it does. A redemption sells existing units, while a SIP instruction governs future purchases. Check and separately cancel or modify the ongoing instruction if that is your intention.
