What is GST?
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax on supply of goods and services. The 2026 framework simplifies the slabs: a 5% essentials rate, an 18% standard rate, and a 40% luxury/sin-goods rate replace the older 12% and 28% slabs (verify the latest GST Council notifications for sector-specific changes). GST has two components for intra-state supply: CGST (Central) and SGST (State), each equal to half the total GST. For inter-state supply, a single IGST equal to the full GST rate applies. This calculator handles both adding GST to a base price and removing GST from a GST-inclusive price.
How to use the GST Calculator
- Choose add or remove GST. Add: price is exclusive of GST. Remove: price is inclusive of GST.
- Enter the amount. The base price (add mode) or the inclusive price (remove mode).
- Select the GST rate. 5%, 18% or 40% (the 2026 simplified slabs).
- Review the breakdown. Base amount, GST amount, CGST/SGST split and total.
- Use for invoicing. Especially handy for freelancers, traders and consultants.
Formula and method
Adding GST inflates the base; removing extracts the base from a GST-inclusive price. CGST and SGST are equal halves of the GST for intra-state transactions; for inter-state, IGST replaces the split.
