What is NSC?

The National Savings Certificate (NSC) is a fixed-income savings instrument offered through post offices in India. The current rate is 7.7% per annum (April-June 2026), compounded annually but payable at maturity. The tenure is fixed at 5 years. NSC qualifies for a Section 80C tax deduction up to โ‚น1.5 lakh per year (under the old regime). The interest earned each year is taxable but is deemed reinvested (qualifying for 80C in subsequent years) - except the final year's interest. NSC suits conservative savers looking for a guaranteed 5-year horizon.

How to use the NSC Calculator

  1. Enter the investment amount. There's no upper limit, but 80C benefit is capped at โ‚น1.5 lakh/year.
  2. Confirm the rate. Currently 7.7% per annum (April-June 2026).
  3. Tenure is fixed at 5 years. NSC cannot be exited early except in special circumstances.
  4. Review the maturity value. See the final amount and the year-wise interest credited.
  5. Check 80C tax impact. Use the Income Tax Calculator to see how the 80C deduction reduces your tax.

Formula and method

Maturity = P ร— (1 + r)^5

Annual compounding at the prevailing NSC rate over the fixed 5-year tenure. Interest accrues yearly but is paid only at maturity.

When NSC fits

  • Section 80C tax saving. โ‚น1.5 lakh deduction under the old regime.
  • Government-backed. Zero default risk.
  • Fixed and predictable. Know your exact maturity upfront.
  • Better than 5-year FD for many. Slightly higher rate and 80C makes NSC competitive.
  • 5-year lock-in. Disciplines you to leave the money alone.
