How is NSC maturity calculated?

NSC uses annual compounding: maturity = principal x (1 + rate)^5. The interest accrues each year but is paid only when the certificate matures.

What are the tax benefits of NSC?

The amount invested in NSC qualifies for Section 80C deduction up to Rs 1.5 lakh. The interest is taxable, but for the first four years it is deemed reinvested and also qualifies for 80C.

Is there a lock-in for NSC?

Yes. NSC has a fixed 5-year term and cannot normally be encashed before maturity, except in specific cases such as the holder's death.
