What is the Employees' Provident Fund?

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is a mandatory retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. Both employee and employer contribute 12% of the basic salary plus DA each month. EPF earns interest at a government-declared rate (8.25% for FY 2024-25). The EPF corpus you build over your career often becomes a substantial part of your retirement. The calculator projects your EPF balance at retirement based on current basic salary, expected salary growth, current EPF balance and years remaining to retirement.

How to use the EPF Calculator

  1. Enter your basic salary (or basic + DA). Monthly basic on which EPF is calculated.
  2. Enter expected annual salary increase. Typically 5-10% per year over a career.
  3. Enter your current EPF balance. Check your last statement on the EPFO portal.
  4. Set your current age and retirement age. Retirement age is typically 58 or 60.
  5. Review the projected corpus. See your estimated EPF corpus at retirement and the total contributions split between employee and employer.

Formula and method

Monthly contribution = 12% ร— basic (employee) + 12% ร— basic (employer) 8.33% of employer's share goes to EPS pension, capped at โ‚น15,000 basic. Balance grows at the declared EPF rate, compounded yearly.

EPF compounds the running balance every year at the declared rate. Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic, but a portion of the employer's contribution diverts to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS).

Why EPF is the foundation of salaried retirement

  • Forced, automatic saving. 12% + 12% before you ever see the money.
  • Tax-free maturity. EPF withdrawal after 5+ years of continuous service is tax-free.
  • Government-declared rate. 8.25% for FY 2024-25, generally above inflation.
  • Employer matching. The 12% from your employer is effectively part of your salary.
  • Top up via VPF. Voluntary PF lets you contribute more, earning the same rate.
